Caracals are listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. They are native to Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and India. They are sometimes refered to as the desert lynx, as they have short tails and tufted ears like the lynx and bobcat, but differ in the color and texture of their fur. They're still common in southern Africa but in the Middle East are becoming more rare. They can leap over 12 feet in the air to catch prey. Caracals are considered to primarily be nocturnal, making them difficult for researchers to study.
